The topics that they talk about should always depends on the level of personal relation, a business meeting should not be personal.

A professional worker, will never ask about how a person's marriage life is, or how much he get paid.

An intelligent person, will talk about general topics and things that suits the general population depending on demographic factors that are stereotypical.

An old man always like to talk about old times and how it was easier, but does not want to talk about his health problems and mortality rates.

a man in his 40s/ 50s like retirement plans and future investment, but does not like talking about how he wasted his early years without investing in future retirement plans.

A man in his mid 30s most of the time like sports, but not politics

a young man like technology, but not old times

and so on.

These are generally true but not in every case, an intelligent person will try to fish what the other person is interested in by asking general questions or talking about general topics at first.

An intelligent person is a good listener who shows interest in discussion and  participates in a free flow discussion to gather knowledge without providing any judgement.
