Is pile cap design a conservative approach when designed for a single pile? What is the role of pile cap?

PILE CAPS MAY BE CONSIDERED AS DEEP BEAMS WHICH WOULD EFFECTIVELY TRANSMIT THE LOAD FROM COLUMN TO PILES.THE SAME WOULD MAKE PILECAPS VERY MASSIVE.THE QUESTION IS WHETHER The ppile cap would help to takr additional load .

The grade beams design, is the major element when you design a pile cap with single pile (carry moment due to eccentricity of pile), actually single pile, plie cap is transfer the column load to the pile with conservative minimum reinforcement to carry transervse spliting forces due to column load.

Unless a single pile is used, a cap is necessary to spread the vertical and horizontal loads and any overturning moments to all the piles in the group.

The pile cap has a reaction that is a series of concentrated loads (the piles); and the design considers the column loads and moments, any soil overlying the cap (if it is below the ground surface), and the weight of the cap.
