mister Nishchal Pandey has the complete answer. I would do a SPT with a boring, a static cone test can give you a good indication of the soil.

we can determine the soil bearing capacity for the site location by following tests -

1 - Plate load test

2 - Standard penetration test

3 - Static cone penetration test

4 - California Bearing Ratio or simply CBR value test

  1. On site determination of bearing capacity is done by Plate load test.
  2. Correlation with field test data metod can also be used like Standard penetration test (SPT), Cone penetration test (CPT)

For single or double storey building the test for bearing capacity is not loaded just check the soil condition at site if it is not water logged area and after2 or3 feet of excavation you find a hard strata of clay or silty clay soil then it mean that the soil is safe and having bearing capacity of about1 ton /sqft
