It must be there is no compromise on this point. It is essential not only for equipment protection, but energy saving as well. Every employee is responsible to safe guard company's interests and keep the confidentiality that come to his/her knowledge or part of the job.

A very simple yet interesting question indeed!

Before answering this question I believe we need to take a few factors in consideration

.

First thing is what kind of PC it is, is it a basic desktop or is it a workstation/server class desktop?

Second thing is what kind of work do you do on the PC?

Third thing is what does the compliance / rules say at your workplace?

There are many answers to this question which are as followed:

  • It is better to shut down the computer before leaving the office to save power.
  • It is better to leave the computer on if it is downloading updates overnight.
  • It is better to leave the computer on if you have unfinished work/projects open in desktop and want to continue the next morning.
  • It is best to leave the computer on if your computer takes a very long time to boot or if it is a workstation/server with server based operating systems.
  • It is better to turn off your computer daily while leaving office because it reduces risk of any unexpected electrical hazard that might occur from an unattended computer.
  • Turning computer off means it is getting a break. We all know everything has a lifetime. The more the computer runs, the less its lifetime will be.

The idea is you need to understand an d decide when to leave it off and when to leave it on. It can be a combination of both. Just remember that feasibility, flexibility and usability are the three things that you should keep in mind for any IS/IT related device.

Yes, it should be shut down when you are leaving in your seat, because in case suddenly power brake or power failure it's effecting your PC.

I would recommend yes. It is a good practice. Your data is more safe when the PC is  completely power off rather than in screen lock mode. your PC is shutdown it won't be at risk from power surges & cuts. Also re booting a machine improves performance. You should also check the workplace policy.

Shutting down depends on the organisation and or the environment the user is in

Due to the massive number of users, big enterprises prefer to update their antivirus and widows patches during evening hours to avoid disruptions to the users thus they request the users to ensure all their machines are on during this time.

However, the small business would prefer to save on power thus request the users to power off their machines while leaving for home

The small enterprises would
