There are two concepts that depend on the nature of business and the need for on-time communication. In most of service/ support businesses, we might prefer open work stations to get sure a live updates are always available among business partners (employees), while we would prefer closed cabins to assure non-disturbance time, good enough to allow development, innovation, problem solving and other mental activities that require so.

personally, prefers open workstations provided a strict adherence to office rules related to noise control, paper less and availability of closes meeting rooms whenever the need emerges

It all depends on the type of job function you have.

I had an office ... most the time my door was open, however when I needed some quiet time I closed the door and had not been disturbed to do my job ... especially when you are on the phone...

I have been working in cubicles ... no privacy ... you hear things you should not hear at times... it been distracting ... the entire room been keep to warm or to cold... every time we had personnel flying through a major airport we all got the flu/very ill

Talking to each other in a room with cubicles in engineering ... you have every one right there and weekly meetings started to be obsolete.

How much interaction do you need ... how fast do you need information ... how secure do you need it... These are things to keep in mind ...

Workstations are really much appreciable way for healthy and team working environment  it helps for smooth and inter connection. Other hand we may need some closed cabins too for sensitive working as well for most seniors to maintain discipline.
