The Accountants should have knowledge of the environment they are working on and how that will affect or work with accounts.
They should know the work ethics to ensure a professional and confidential environment is maintained.
The systems knowledge is useful or they should be quick in understanding any new system to ensure they can work in the system and acheive any targets / reports etc.
I think most basic accountant is
Solid knowlege of accounting
Computer skill is vital in current business
Accurate, transperent and confidencial

An Accountant must have allot of skills but I will mention the most important skills which are as follow:
1- Computer knowledge with the accounting software's familiarity.
2- Fundamentals of the accounting (Accounting equations, Recording of entries, Presentation, Reconciliation and explanations).
3- Reporting (Different types of Statements, Analyzing of accounting records etc.)
