Water is mostly convered in water , and makes up upto 70% of earths surface while the other  29% are contents and islands.

96.5% of earthes water is oceans as salt water, 3.5% fresh water lakes, frozen glaciers, icecaps and from 3.5% fresh water 7% is locked in icecaps and less than 1 % fresh water is radially available accessible worlds fresh water.

so you can understand by the statically figures that how much of fresh water is available and if we don't treat the water, we may be unable to get the required healthy water for our livelihood.

water scarcity is well know and all the measures should be taken to preserve and conserve water to save life.
