Frankly speaking - asking for a pay raise requires a certain amount of finesse. For one thing, you want to be sure to pick the best time to do it so your request doesn't get the brush-off from your employer. The obvious factors would be to look into what's happening in your company, how your own work has been going and whether additional tasks have been added to your Job Description. Additionally, there are larger issues that can help determine optimum periods for making your pitch for more money - like the current economic situation, availability of alternate labour and situation of the external job market, to name a few.

Today.

As somebody said, after lunch.   But not on the first or last day of the working week.

An ideal organization should have its policy for salary increment and every employee must know this. Thus there is no question about asking for this. The increment percentage may vary time to time depending on market conditions. But in any case, if employees are to ask for salary increment, that apparently means employees have started becoming demotivated in that organization and the organization has no policy for salary increment. At the end of the day, salary increment is the employer's responsibility.

You will ask  for an increment only if you haven't received your annual increment as per company policy and for that you do not need any specific timing to do so.

Thanks for the invitation, it should be as per company policies. Usually an appraisal is good enough time to discuss such things.

If at all, in exceptional cases (i.e repatriation etc.) one need to ask for it then I would agree with Duncan Robertson & Asim Ali Khan.

Thanks for invitation,

immediately, after the annual performance discussion, provided you have achieved all objectives required and you have an "excellent annual appraisal".

Contract renewal Time or if you are interested to resign from current job or you want job switch, that's the best suitable time to talk to your supervisor/hiring manager about your current situation and about salary raise. If you are truely an asset for them they will definitely retain you. If you are good a performer and your demand for salary raise is reasonable within the budget, possibility is they will accept your demand.
