The general power system is normally managed by the distribution companies and provide power supply to residential and commercial complex. It consists mainly of lighting, HVAC, water heating etc. It has simple protection system comprising of MCBs, ELCBs etc.

An industrial power systems such as manufacturing industries, oil and gas, fertilizers etc.are larger in scale than General power system. Electrical designs for industrial power systems are usually studied for load flow, short-circuit fault levels, and voltage drop for steady-state loads and during starting of large motors. The objectives of the studies are to assure proper equipment and conductor sizing, and to coordinate protective devices so that minimal disruption is cause when a fault is cleared. Industrial Power system have an electrical system of switchgears, own step down transformers, power distribution syste, power factor improvement capacitors, motors, emergency deisel generators, power management system, some have own generators with better system protection and more efficient electrical installation. It is normally having different tariff structure for payment then the general power system.
