It all depends on how the student makes his way through the learning process. The teacher is not a file, but someone who follows the process with their knowledge, training and motivation. The student must understand, relate and apply. The memory will turn organic and serene.

Understanding the what the definitions, concepts and words make it very easy to memorise and retain the information for a more extended period, knowing examples works equally.

It is first important to comprehend the subject and master the areas where questions are expected to be asked.  Different examinations have different challenges, memorising definitions, concepts and words becomes easier if you know what and understand what they are...eg. freedom of speech is embbed in democracy, even if you forgotten the phrase freedom of speech, you will not be wrong to answer it as right to protest, the right to free press etc....in law, even if forgotten a case law, you can answer that in a decided case, so and so was decided because of so legal reasoning.... its mastering the subject that is better way to study for exam...

Best method is understand definitions and wrait it by my method just that
