Have you thought of improving your staffs' learning Skills to contribute when some staff member is absent?
i have many experience in my relavant job field. i sometime admin , training , duty staf in my former service field. If your firm is separated as a department wise, all the staffs of each department can learn the whole works that commonly happens in regularly and divide each work part for each persons and weekly or monthly interchange the works between staffs , so that if one or two staffs absent , the other staffs can manage
Just quick points after reading the other responses on this question?
- Absenteeism is perceived to the behavioral indication of demotivation. Definitely requires for coversations and follow up conversations to identify the root cause
- Asking others to fill the tasks, will rise to disappointments to other members of the team. It is unlikely that it will be the solution, can be at a moment, but not forever. The direct superior may probably fill the tasks by rolling up his sleeves to show compassion and good for role-modelling being hands-on
Moreso, asking any member of the team to do similar job may pose a redundant role, hence showing to the absentee his insigficance and further damage the commitment to work again
