Marketing is more of a strategic function in an organization, responsible with development of long term strategies and plans mainly. In contrast, Sales is more of an operational function which ensures that the strategies set by the marketing functions are put into action. Sales have the responsibility to bring in revenue for the company, where as they are dependent on marketing for the direction and tools to ensure that.

Good question. I will share what I experienced.

During an internship work, I was looking into selling a X amount of units within Y days for Z days. This is pure sales-for meeting targets.

Now when in my current job, there are targets but generating demand, providing clients the reason why they will need us, highlighting our unique selling proposition and then continously raising awareness about what we do and why we can make a differnce is marketing. Targets are to be met, yes but creating awarenes of brand, competive advantages through cost and efficiency and generating goodwill and then meeting targets is marketing.
