Neither.
Or rather, it doesn't matter whether a receptionist is male, female, transgender or doesn't identify with any gender. Neither does it matter if they are "good looking" or not. All of these factors are irrelevant.
Any person with good looks and a happy face have to right to be a front office assist.
Because, by default, there is an assumption that this is "women's work." Its a systemic cultural bias that believes a) men wouldn't want this work, b) women are better suited for this work, c) there is value in having an attractive woman at the front desk to greet guests / clients / customers. Because it's systemic, young women are preconditioned to seek out these jobs as entry level positions where men are funneled towards other entry level positions at the same point in their career. When employers recruit, they have a specific type of individual in mind for the position and that type of person is frequently an attractive young woman. The systemic problem continues when there is an assumption that the individual women who hold these jobs are not qualified to do more difficult work and they are not advanced within an organization. When they attempt to leave this position, future prospective employers do not value the experience for it's transferrable skills and these women may wind up in a similar position with another company because "its all they have experience doing."Men, on the other hand, if they do take on these positions, are significantly more likely to be promoted to other roles within the company where they are able to utilize the transferable skills gained in the role. Like many job classifications that are held mostly by women with no logical reason why, there are systemic biases and social forces that maintain the status quo.
It's not about the gender. Its depend on how he/she handle the job well, friendly, good service and maintenance to the customers no over acting off course. It will make the customer happy and loyal.
