I am not an expert but I can give my opinion. I think in 2017 social media marketing will continue to evolve.
1- Video will increase - moving into 2017, expect to see increased volumes of video content specially in social media
2- Social Commerce - this is not new by there will be increase in more features and integrations through this platform and will become a powerful avenue for sales.
3- Virtual Reality - Social media marketers will be faced with figuring out how to make sense of this new technology
4- Mobile advertising will grow more competitive.
Social media marketing will keep evolving towards more interaction between brands and consumers. In fact, people will be looking for more emotional links, ease of use and content that is quick to absorb, pleasant to watch and relevant.
An “omen” from the specialized news is predicting the agony of Twitter and this assumption is based on the medium itself which is constraining and not fun to use anymore as it was at its inception. Tweeter will be relevant only if marketer foster more engagement and less marketing messages full of hashtags that are impossible to read!
Live video is what audiences are after so more video content to grab attention. Personalization is a top priority if marketers want to reach only consumers that matter. The tracking of consumer’s behavior will become even more relevant than before if marketers want to reach high potential target markets.
It is the combination of relevant content with data pulled from marketing analytic tools that will push marketing efforts towards building more affinity with and advocacy from consumers.
In the Gulf region, e-commerce is continually growing so social media will certainly complement efforts made by brands to capture part of this growth. So more efforts will be put on the tech side along with a focus on customers, content and personalization.
Apart from the answers given by experts, I personally feel GEO-SOCIAL is what will be strongly incorporated as part of social media strategy by brands. It is important to connect to the audience while they are still at the place of contact. For example, imagine a hotel where one of the guests is celebrating their anniversary, and posts the same on a social networking channel, the hotel with GEO-SOCIAL can find that and make sure they make it extra special for the couple, who will automatically make sure to mention the same, right in their own set of followers.

You can start live streaming with Facebook Live. Live is like having a TV camera in your pocket. Anyone with a phone now has the power to broadcast to anyone in the world. There are several ways you can effectively engage with your followers. It’s an opportunity to really engage with them as the video in recording. When you interact live, you feel connected in a more personal way.
Artificial Intelligence
Artificial intelligence (AI) is the ability of computers to understand certain aspects of the natural world, and ultimately, use that understanding to complete tasks normally requiring human intellect and effort. Many social networking sites have acquired smaller AI businesses to increase their functionality and appeal to users.
Artificial intelligence is now reaching a level where it is useful to many people’s daily lives. The rise of digital assistants, such as Siri and Google Assistant have got people used to talking to their phone rather than exercising their fingers. With WhatsApp Twitter Facebook, and Google also all introducing integrated bots to help with bookings and customer service, prepare to start talking to machines much more often. Chat bots make sense for brands, allowing common questions to be answered and simple bookings to be managed. This can free up customer service representatives to answer more in-depth queries.
