First by understanding the difference between a leader and a manager.  A leader focuses on what to do and what are our targets, a manager focuses on how to do it.  If you focus on the small details and are looking into how daily tasks are done then you are not a leader. A leader is the torch that lights the way to reach the target destination.  Without leaders employees will stumble and companies will fail to achieve targets.  Leaders always have the big picture in mind and they lead the way to tell people the right direction.  They create, innovate and plan and then motivate and engage everyone to contribute.  They create leaders who are able to carry the torch later.  Without Leaders we get too occupied with the fine details and the daily tasks and how to do things and forget to dream and plan ahead.  Without leaders we forget where are we heading and get distracted.  This is why leadership is so important.

The top leadership qualities are:

1- To be a role model

2- To focus on the horizon not under his feet

3- To focus on people not on systems and processes

4- To inspire and motivate others

5- To create leaders

6- To have innovation skills

7- To accept challenges and take risks

8- To ask what and why all the time

9- To have a positive attitude

If you can work on those skills and develop them then you can become a successful leader.

Research showed that the following steps can help improve your leadership skills, and move you into a leadership role in your workplace:

You should seek and accept challenges, be willing to take risks, innovate, and experiment to find new and better ways of doing things.

You have to find out what people think about your style of leadership, and use this as a key to making changes to the way you influence others; peers, supervisors and friends.

You have to take time to mentor others and demonstrate effective business ethics.

You have to set practical goals with realistic timelines and develop action plans that will provide your people with direction toward achieving those goals.

You need to look for opportunities to learn and expand your knowledge, and improve and grow as a person.

You should be able to clearly and specifically communicate vision, goals, skills, intentions, and expectations to others, and continually strive to improve your verbal, nonverbal, and listening skills.

You have to admit failures and weaknesses, believe that no one is perfect, and surround yourself with people that will fill in your own weakness, and know that the key to success is not avoiding failure, but learning from mistakes.

You should not wait to the time when you take on more responsibilities, but you need to take the initiative, and take on extra projects outside of your job description, and you will learn more , and take on more responsibility.

You should have the ability to foresee potential problems before they happen, and develop ways to prevent them from happening.

You need to be aware of potential opportunities and take advantage of them to benefit the company and employees.

You have to listen effectively to team members, and get feedback from them, and get a sense of what they like and dislike about the projects they work on.

You should communicate with others maintaining an eye contact, avoiding distractions and responding appropriately, and Keeping in mind that communication is not only verbal but also a body language and gestures.

You have to be able to inspire others through your actions to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, and positively influence them, and energize them to achieve their ambitions and passions through talking to them and offering them the recognition that they deserve.

You have to respect and trust your team, and not let them feel weak or incompetent

You need to recognize the value of team members. Learn and encourage other team members to learn things from the person who is specialized in that area.

Because things are changing rapidly, it is important for you to constantly learn and challenge yourself.

You need to delegate work to your employees and let them feel empowered, and If you do this, this will allow you to better concentrate on the goals you need to achieve yourself, and your employees will feel more involved and have more opportunity to develop new skills.

If you want to execute business processes and plans effectively, you need to be self-disciplined and make sure others on your team are disciplined too.
