There are two types of media.Differential and specific media. For general microbial recovery and growth, general media such as SCDA,NA,R2A were used. For recovery of particular organism, specific media such as MA,MB,XLDA,VRBGA,MSA has been used .
Media are basicaly two types, differential media and selective media, Mixed population of microbes are cultured on differential media, such as R2A Agar is used for total bacterial count , generaly Soyabean casein digest Agar are used for total viable aerobic count.selective media are that which support only single and selective species and colour indication , such as Cetrimide Agar is used for Pseudomas species,
Xylose lysine dextrose Agar is used for Salmonella Species, Macconkey Agar, EMB Agar is used for E Coli species. etc.
Selective media,minimal media,enriched media,differential media
Broadly Aerobic and Anaerobic media are employed. The answer to the question is quite lengthy to explain because for one species several types of media can be used. So the answer again depends on the species.Further blood agar can be utilized for streptococci but can also occur employed for some other. Urine, blood, chocolate, bile can be added to base media for growth and selection. Lastly, the media selection depends on the purpose of what it is to imply practiced like for growth or preservation.
blood, urine, sputum, pus, stool, CSF and other body fluids, tissue fragments
common media: blood agar, chocolate agar, mackonkey's agar, muller hinton agar
BLOOD, URINE, THROAT SWAB,CSF, PLEURAL FLUID, PERITONEAL FLUID,SPUTUM, PUS ARE SOME SAMPLES USED FOR CULTURE
MEDIAS ARE OF VARIOUS TYPES-ENRICHED-BLOOD AGAR, SELECTIVE-MACKONKEY AGAR, BROTHS-LOVENSTEIN-JENSON MEDIM FOR TUBERCULOSIS.
