You will never get the IE7 or IE8 rendering engine to achieve full compatibility with HTML5, CSS3, and other modern technologies. They are simply not capable of it.

However there are some hacks, tools and plugins which can get you part of the way.

Tools like Modernizr will help you by allowing you to detect which features are supported, to give your site a chance to work around it.

jQuery is a great library anyway, but is particularly good in this context because it abstracts a lot of browser differences away from the developer. Some things are easy in most browsers but a real pain in IE; jQuery takes a lot of that kind of stuff and makes it easy regardless.

Dean Edwards' IE7.js and Selectivzr are both Javascript libraries that give IE support for lots of the CSS selectors which were missing in older versions. This allows you to write your stylesheets without worrying so much about what IE supports. (IE7.js also fixes a number of IE's other glitches and missing features too)

CSS3Pie is a hack for IE that adds support for CSS border-radius, gradients and box-shadow.

-webkit (Chrome & Safari)

-moz (mozilla)

-o (Opera)

Can also be used.

Irfan has already covered most of it.

We mostly sell projects starting form IE9 with support of other modern browsers (Chrome/FF/Safari etc.) when it comes to HTML5/CSS3 or may have responsive flavor as well.Always recommend progressive enhancement approach, mean if one browser support advance feature like CSS3 border-radius property then make curve or let it be like rectangle in case of IE7/8 or for any other legacy browser, please note we won't recommend to client to use polyfills like CSS3 Pie or any other JS shim due to the poor rendering capability of IE8 specially.

Trident or MSHTML being the rendering engine of IE8 browser is much slower then IE9 Chakra.

Do not try to make fancy stuff for legacy browsers, you making your life hell with great unstability of the web app in terms of usability with tons of redundant JS files.

I think this is not very time worthy as we developers should think more about dealing with new browsers with new features. We should leave this issue to whom build browsers to try to catch with the web new technologies but, at the same time, developers should assure the functionality of their own web products over most of the used browsers. So, I think some more javascript is needed in this case. If you need to know better how to deal with this, check this link.

HTML5 Shim/ShivThis library provides support for all of the new HTML5 structural elements using a Javascript function called createElement(); - its really important to include this in your <head> as well, so that all HTML elements that older browsers dont understand will be rendered correctly before the page loads completely.

All the HTML5 new semantics will not be supported in older version. So we should apply the  display property as block for all those new semantics.

For IE9 and Previous Versions we should add the HTML5Shiv plugin.

In CSS3 we must give the browser specific notations like -webkit-,-ms-,-o-
