The first and foremost quality that a dentist should posses is the ability to communicate with the patient and understand the patient's expectations of the treatment. In addition to first understanding where the patient comes from, the dentist should have the ability to explain the treatment plan in laymen's terms so that there is no confusion on the patient's part as to what the next step will be. This allows the patient to have an active role in the determination of his or her treatment plan.

The dentist must have the sufficient knowledge of the disease he or she is attempting to treat, the means by which he or she may treat them, and also sufficient experience in that particular treatment prior to attempting to treat it. After all, the eye cannot see what the mind does not know. Therefore, sufficient theoretical knowledge about the etiology of any given disease, the different options to treat it, and the expected outcomes of such treatments must be well know to the dentist.

The appropriate instruments must be available; and the dentist must be familiar with how they are operated. Otherwise attempting to treat a patient without the required equipment is but a futile, heroic attempt on the part of the dentist, which does no justice to the patient.

Understanding the expected results of any given treatment plan is imperative for their success. This is partly achieved by adequate review of the literature, as well as clinical experience of the dentist. Knowing what to expect is half the treatment plan. This is particularly important when decided which treatment the dentist should exclude from the beginning and which to pursue.

Arguably the most important quality, in my humble opinion, that a dentist must have is the understand that we as dentists do not treat teeth; we treat people. A dentist must not treat the oral cavity as a separate entity and must fully comprehend the "human" side of dentistry. Patient come to us because they are in pain, worried about the ailment they suffer from and attend to our practice's seeking psychological as well as physical comfort.
