Hello,

as a supervisor i have to make sure of the followings:

1. call him to check if is feeling well and alive.

2. if he is sick or not feeling well then he has to submit sick eave.

3. if he has some personal affairs then he should submit a vacation.

4. in all cases he should recorded that he did not show up for work, this is a legal issue - assume he is involved in car accident or any other issue!! then legally should registered as absent.

5. reordering that he is absent does not mean not cover his work place, if this matter is a repetitive behavior then it should be deducted from his pay for discipline purposes otherwise the department will be out of control.

6. if his absent due to a problem that i can help him to resolve it, then i should give him the support needed.

best regards

This is a question demonstrates your ethics, integrity and company culture. There are several reasons, as a team player you can inquire and understand what the reason for the absent. You are guiding, leading, managing & communicating with the staffs every day. Understanding the reason whether genuine or not is important to decide how to deal with it. Following interpersonal skills will help you to understand your team better:

-          Listening

-          Clear communication

-          Team spirit

-          Support wherever necessary

-          Give ownership of the work

-          Group discussion on general issues within your responsibility

-          A general understanding about your team, their family, living situation etc..

-          Finally, as a colleague show up your kindness with logic thoughts.

Anyway I don’t accept to hide the information from organization; it is your responsibility to communicate with higher management if it is necessary. Do not hide, it will complicate the situation. Inform the management on-time, support the staff if his reason is a genuine. This will help you to help the staff

The prime objective is to deliver the tasks assigned. If, in case, employee don't show up and his absence obstacles the task on hand then one should explore the option to get the support from team by deliberating some extra duties for that specific day. In the meanwhile, one should keep a close eye that task performs well within the desired timeline and he should be ready to cover up the absentee for critical scenarios

Covering up , as I understand is allowing disciplinary setup to fall apart. I will never ever cover any such person and ask him to follow leave rules.
