1 Never be the first to defect 2. Retaliate only after your partner has defected 3. Be prepared to forgive after carrying out just one act of retaliation 4. Adopt this strategy only if the probability of meeting the same player again exceeds 2/3

Tit for tat is a strategy that can be implemented in actions  with repeated moves or a series of similar moves  i.e (Action and Reaction) the concept revolves around game theory, an economic framework that explains how humans interact with each other in competitive environments. There are two types of game theory: cooperative game theory and uncooperative game theory.Tit for tat states that a person is more successful in game theory if he cooperates with another person. Implementing a tit for tat strategy occurs when one person, or agent, cooperates in the very first interaction with another agent, and then mimics that agent's proceeding moves. The idea is a person can reward another with good behavior so he reciprocates with good behavior. This strategy is based on the concepts of retaliation and altruism. When faced with a dilemma, an individual cooperates when another member has an immediate history of cooperating and defaults when the counterparty previously defaulted. For example,a bank when dealing with  customers  can use tit for tat strategy so both parties( bank and delinquent  customers ) benefit. Bank  starts with cooperation by waiving 10% of amount  due   to induce good behavior. The idea is the customer responds by also paying   . If, however, customer  reacts by taking advantage and not paying  , the bank retaliates by implementing full amount pay to discourage the behavior.

It is a strategy that has been used by social psychologists and sociologists in studying effective and influencing techniques to avoid escalating the circle of the conflict between the disputants and also to move cooperation among them.
