Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is an information project designed to coordinate all resources, information and activities needed to complete business processes, such as accounting and human resources. Enterprise resource planning supports most systems procedures that manage a variety of operational functions such as manufacturing, supply management, finance, enterprise, human resources and customer relationship management functions, all in a unified database. The Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) is based on a shared database (called Master Data) and a special software design. The shared database allows the business departments to store and retrieve information in the activity period. The software design allows the business administration to choose the models needed, arrange them, and add new models to improve performance. Ideally, data is integrated between different business processes. In practice, the ERP may include a set of disparate applications, each running separate data stores in a single database.

ERP software-generated automated reports, enterprise resource planning systems are able to give companies an immediate picture of its real-time operations: production, inventory and order processing. ERP software tracks a business’s resources (raw materials, cash, and employees), overhead and commitments (employee payroll, purchase orders and customer orders) for individual departments and for the company as a whole. Most ERP systems are modular. The more modules offered by an ERP system, the more specific reports and projects could get if necessary; one potential drawback to a company having many modules is that each module represents an additional cost for the purchasing company. ERP systems are a powerful way for companies to manage costs, service and production.
