A slot is a computer processor connection designed to make upgrading the processor much easier, where the user would only have to slide a processor into a slot.
I assume you are referring to ethernet switches. In this case, a slot number is part of the numbering scheme for modular network devices. When configuring a switch on CLI, you will need to refer to a physical interface via slot/port number (for example fa 2/12 refers to slot 2 port 12). Each switch model can be set up differently.
