may contribute to hihger fuel consumption. may also have some effect in during cornering specially on high speed

Higher fuel consumption, less agility when cornering fast, Higher total weight, some additional maintenance costs..

That said - it really depends what kind of type of AWD technology are we talking about, are diffs electronic or mechanical... 

Also consider if you will ever need actual AWD function - if you are driving on asphalt 99% of the time - save you money and just go with RWD or FWD vehicle.
