It depends on the processes that you want to perform on a satellite image:
The most commonly used program is ERDAS IMAGINE, but some processes need ENVI and some other processes require PCI Geomatica
I do not recommend the GIS program in the field of satellite image processing
No body can explain the answer in one sentance becuse everybody is unique and they use their methodology, ideas and plans to analysis the image data...
but morever ERADAS Imagine is giving a good compability and enhance the quilty of analysis
computer and softeware is same but human brain depends the analysis of the data
envi , erdas, idrisi ,.....
Yes, I prefer the Erdas Imagin as most commonly analysis program for satellite images!
The Data Which we are using matters a lot because the model takes in as garbage in and gives as garbage out so the quality of the data is much more.
ArcGIS, QGIS or ENVI are great for analysis tools like proximity, interpolation, etc over different raster or vector layers. There're also great specifically designed tools for particular applications like the watershed, etc. But these are more focused on different layers of raster/vector data.
If we want to do satellite image analysis then Erdas IMAGINE does a great job with the model maker and different terrain and radiometry dependent tools.
But yes, for data analysis ArcGIS, QGIS/ ENVI does a better job.
Then again we've different rankings in this depending on the pros &cons of being open and commercial software.
Eardas software and ENVI are the best Remote Sensing softwares for data analysis.
Erdas Imagine is the best in my opinion
ERDAS Imagen software is one of the best software for analysis of remote sensing images
