There is no realy maximum value of load average it's depend on your resources Memory and CPU.

To predict and analyze the increases of load of your system then you have to know which processess is running on your system that consuming your Memory and CPU and try to manage them.

You can monitor the increases of system load using top command or uptime.

Note: In some systems the load average should be on a specific range (ie:-) and if this value changed for some reasons then you have to check your system it's a dangerous situation.

2 x number of cores, is the best and recommended value for load average, eg: for a system having four cores, system load up to 8~10 is a good value . >10 should be alerted, if it exceeds 20, there could be performance issues, and if it keeps going high, it can make the server freeze.
