Power factor correction units consist of capacitors which act as reactive current generators. By providing the reactive power, they reduce the total amount of power you must draw from the network

and we use it because the cost of the electricity will decrease cause if the factory doesn't fix these units they will pay forfeit

the electricty power which we used it in every where like houses and factories called

an apearant power and it's combain from :

working power which creating light- heating -motion -etc and measure by kilo watts KW

reactive power it's wasted power not useful measure by kilo volts-amperes -reactive KVAMR

and for power factor is ratio of working power to apearant power Pf =KW \ KVA and this ratio it's better when it's become closer to1

and to improve power factor we use power factor correction units and it's suitably sized of switched  capacitors working as reactive current generators and it's  providing the reactive power which  reduce the total amount of power you must draw from the network depending on the ratio above

and when we have big draw of electricty power like factroies which have big motors or heaters we rediuce the cost of the electricty power bill by rediucing the wasted power by improving power factor

By using capacitors to produce reactive power,we use them to reduce the power losses in transmission lines in case of sending this reactive power from the far generators also to reduce the generators and conductors requerments(reducing the size

it is basically a ratio between the real power (Kilowatts) and the apparent power (Volt Amperes). it define the value of useful power in the circuit. its ideal unit is01. but practically we have0.8 means80% useful energy and20% losses as reactive power...sometimes we have0.9 or may be less0.7. to improve the power factor we should minimize the value of legging VARS which is due to inducttion. so we must inject leading VARS in to the system to balance that. we can use capacitor banks. synchronous motors, synchophasors and phase controllers for providing leading VARS to improve the power factor.
