There are lots of ways to appreciate and be a leader.
LEADERSHIP WITH OUT EGO ITS VERY POWERFUL. IN OTHER WORDS, REMOVE YOUR SHOES AND SHOW HOW THE WORK SHOULD BE DONE.
Before you attempt to be creative as a Leader to break ice among your team mates, you need to self-evaluate the following:
a) Are you being respected as Leader or being Loved as a Boss?
b) Are you Praising or giving due credits to your team mate publicly?
c) Did you take yourself the blame for any failure on behalf of your team mate publicly?
d) Is your team among various other teams of this organization considered to be best?
e) Were you fair to each of your team mate on all deeds?
If your Answer is “YES” to the above questions, then it’s good idea to be creative. And your teammates will appreciate and find a new way to looking at things, life, work or whatever. Small things matter most sometimes like:
a) Eat your lunch with them with a condition that you ask short but important questions about anything and listen to them carefully. Be interested in them.
b) Change – Let them change themselves if they wish to. Don’t imply your formats ask them to bring their own, give them free hand.
c) Analysis – Ask them to put shorter and smatter data and gauge that against current data and involve them into it so that they evaluate changes themselves.
d) Compliment them regularly and consistently.
Now this is the time when you be creative, whatever they did above, you apply your approach in more simply and accurate way which is different than them.
Let me tell you a short story that actually happened during my job. One of my colleagues who was reporting to me was responsible for generating invoice and we had implemented a new ERP software JDE. Due to some glitch in software, the tax was always being calculated wrongly and every time the customers would complain. When this started happening consistently I investigated and found that my colleague was putting a wrong command (taught by the trainer to him). I took him out for a Lunch to have discussions with regard to this problem and didn’t discuss this problem at all till desert (Ice Crème) arrived on our table. I had asked Restaurant Manager to take one scoop of ice cream out before adding sweet sugar to it and add salt. My colleague complained that this ice cream instead of being sweet is salty in taste and he didn’t eat that at all. I simply replied to him this is the taste we leave to our customers through our invoices. That day till last day of my career, the mistake never occurred again.
We need to apply different approach to different problem but the approach has to be constant and permanent and the stakeholders remember it for the rest of their lives.
Thanks
