what is the best philosophy for Airports Maintenance ?
The best maintenance in the airport is to build an excellent team with all informations to reach the maximum safty for human and for airport also achieving all standars for ICAO.
the best maintenance philosophy for Airport Maintenance is to have the best team with experienced staff ready to accomplish their duties without stop daily operations...
"Safety doesn't happen by accident" on an airport and a cent spent on prevention, is better than a dollar spent on cure.
Determine the full scope, manpower and physical input requirements of the maintenance regime. Draft daily, weekly and monthly check lists. Identify maintenance training and vocational skills requirements. Set the bar high and invest in your manpower infrastructure. Knowledgeable, trained and confident people are infinately better than untrained, unskilled, poorly paid and inexperienced people. Poorly trained and inadequately supervised staff will damage expensive and critical equipment very easily through rough handling, ignorance , incompetence and carelessness.
"Controlled," short 10 / 15 minute "toolbox" pre shift talks are the norm. Involve the staff and get their buy-in, task the line managers which helps get their individual and collective commitment to diligently performing the work. This is team building. It also provides a opportunity for management to touch on (SMS) workplace safety and brief personnel on scheduled events, and for personnel to voice any concerns for equipment defects and organisational shortcomings.
The ICAO classification may impact the scope of airport maintenance inputs. Prioritise critical infrastructure first, (AGL, Air Bridges, ARFF, GSE, GPUs', BHS, Building Services etc.,) and if practicle maintain effective contingency plans and equipment. Maintain check lists for all routine regulatory compliance inspections and timed routine maintenance events, signed off by the appropriate servicing personnel and supervisor. Its important work, subject to audit, which people need to be made accountable for.
The airport infrastructure should be under constant review by the supervisory staff and all defects, deficiences and anomolies documented and reported in real time.
Reward and encourage the good maintenence champions.
Clearly establish your full maintenance requirements, plan and carry out full maintenance schedules thereby avoiding downtime. If practicle have standby equipment which should be 100% serviceable at all times.
As airports cannot accept failure, so planning more predicative programs which could be condition based or time based over preventive and it should emergency reactive work as a minimum as possible
Maintenance of Airport is a vauge term as there are several envelopes of responsibilities ... Airside , Landside, Main Terminal, ATC ete etc.
Philosophy for each has to varied depending on criticatity of operations versus Jeopardising the Saftey of Life and Property.
Preventive maintenance scheduling, detailed overall planning based on performance & cost consciousness/efficiency, and last but not least contingency planning.
