Business analyst :can analysis and work in all areas or industry.

Subject expert matter: has depth knowledge in specific industry.

Subject Matter Expert on the other hand, has in-depth knowledge of a specific industry and helps business analysis in the above stated objectives

Business Analysis is a techno-functional role. The business analyst has to understand the functional requirements from the customer, then basis the understanding needs to comprehend the GAP between the "To Be" and the "As Is"state of the product/service and subsequently explain it to the development team by writing an elaborate document like Functional Requirement specifications.
