In an organization, if there two different roles of Business Analyst & Scrum Master, then indeed their roles & responsibilities get divided in different tasks. A scrum master has to do Sprint Planning, Daily Scrum, Srum Review, Sprint Restrospective etc. Scrum master becomes responsible for coordination between developers, testers & product owner. So, where does a Business Analyst go in such cases? Many people might think that they do not require BA when there is a scrum master. However, that is not the case. A Business analyst can certainly add value depending upon what skills he/she has by following below tasks - 1) Grooming Product Backlog - Though, it is a team effort in scrum practice, still a business analyst can make sure that the product backlog is refined & matching up with the latest trends. This is important as the product should be able to compete in the market. 2) Analysis & requirements of upcoming sprints - Since, scrum is an iterative process, scrum master has to focus on each sprint actively in order to make it flawless. Pre-analysis of upcoming sprints can be done by a BA & it will indeed help scrum master. 3) Creating new features & user stories based on those - As each sprint gets released, team will get client feedback on it. Whether it needs modifications or not, what additional functionality can be considered etc. these things can be collectively worked on by scrum master as well as business analyst. Since, business requirements & functional requirements are properly known by BA, it will definitely help & scrum master can focus on sprint planning & execution. 4) Being product owner & quality management - A Business analyst can act as a product owner & take some additional responsibilities. He/she can think from the perspective of product owner & be the critic of product in order to bring more improvements. This will ensure the quality of the product released. As a bottom line, a BA can indeed smoothen the overall process by having a threeway handshake with client, team & scrum master. This will allow scrum master to focus on priorities & the overall execution will speed up.
