There are many reasons that social media platforms will never fully replace email within the working environment, despite Yammer and others bringing social media and social messaging platforms into the workplace:

  • Email provides a level of privacy and professionalism
  • Email inboxes provide a one stop-hub for tasks and one-to-one communications
  • There's not the worry about privacy issues with email as there is with social media
  • Email works across all platforms and applications
  • Email has become more than just a two-way communication tool
  • Social media does not provide a professional online space for business one-to-ones
  • Social media has a major issue with ownership

Social media will never fully replace email because the following reasons:-

- email provides a level of privacy and professionalism that is not present when using social media platforms.

- When communicating with a client using email you don't have to be friends with them and the only information they know about you is what you want to share with them.

- Social media does not provide a professional online space for business one to ones.

- Social media has a major issue with ownership, even after deleting your social media account the information still exists on their server. For companies that host their own email server the data belongs to them.

Social media is gradually dominating the world of information exchange and communication, and therefore eventually replacing the e-mail system. Nevertheless, e-mail is still considered a more formal and confidential route through which information can be shared or exchanged. It will therefore always have its place in the world of e-communication.
