What are all factors which have to be considered in choosing a method of analysis for a particular problem?

Let us say we need to analyze a cantilever beam for deflection due to a point load at the free end. We in some cases go for one dimensional analysis or two or three dimensional in finite element analysis software. My question is what factors or given conditions we need to look for deciding which method1D,2D or3D is suited for a particular problem.

1D Assumption: When the longitudinal Dimension is sufficiently large as comapred to lateral dimensions. eg: pipe, beams etc.

2D Assumption: Plane Strain: When thickness is sufficiently high as compared to other dimesions. eg: Dams etc.Plane stress: when the thickness is suficiantly small as compared to other dimesions. eg: Sheets etc.

3D: When none of the above conditions are met, this is used. In this the criteria is where to do coarse and fine mesh.

All methods which can be used to find the deflections in  a structure through analytical means, as defined by Abbas, are used in Finite Element analysis. The advantage of FE analysis is that you can study stresses and strains at any location of any complicated structure whose analytical solution could be almost impossible to derive.

But analytical results are more accurate than FE results.

I AM NOT KEEN WITH FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS BUT WE CAN USE DIFFERENT METHODS SUCH AS

1. MOMENT AREA METHOD

2. STRAIN ENERGY METHOD

3.CASTILIGANOS METHOD AND SOME MORE METHODS WHICH ARE USED TO FIND THE DEFLECTION.I AM JUST A BEGINNER COULD YOU SAY MORE ABOUT FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS
