All leadership development is designed with a primary focus on seven critical leadership capabilities. Identified by a diverse group of senior University leaders, these capabilities represent the essence of the leadership the University and work places needs today and will require into the future. Our leaders are fully developed in managing people and companies to achieve their goals. Failures and successes are part of the agenda and a requirement to learn.
Neuroscience corroborates this point. When the virus or an amygdala registers a threat to our safety, arteries harden and thicken to handle an increased blood flow to our limbs in preparation for a fight-or-flight response. In this state, we lose access to the social engagement system of the limbic brain and the executive function of the prefrontal cortex, inhibiting creativity and the drive for excellence. From a neuroscience perspective, making sure that people feel safe on a deep level should be job #1 for leaders.
Ten factors contributing to success towards critical thinking capabilities are (1) Empowering others to self-organise (2) Foster a sense of connection and belonging (3) Show openness to new ideas and fosters organisational learning (4) Nutures Growth (5) Help me grow into the next-generation leader (6) Creates a feeling of succeeding and failing together (7) Provide safety for trial and error (8) Has the flexibility to change opinions (9) Is committed to my ongoing trainings (10) Provides goals and objectives with loose guidelines/ direction.
Demonstrates strong ethics and provides a sense of safety.
This theme combines two of the three most highly rated attributes: “high ethical and moral standards” (67% selected it as one of the most important) and “communicating clear expectations” (56%).
Taken together, these attributes are all about creating a safe and trusting environment. A leader with high ethical standards conveys a commitment to fairness, instilling confidence that both they and their employees will honor the rules of the game. Similarly, when leaders clearly communicate their expectations, they avoid blindsiding people and ensure that everyone is on the same page. In a safe environment employees can relax, invoking the brain’s higher capacity for social engagement, innovation, creativity, and ambition.
The Seven critical leadership capabilities are:
1. Strategic thinking and acting: It refers to the external and internal thinking on things that are most important.
2. Responsiveness in Decision making: In the face of ambiguity, making swift decisions in the best interest are necessary.
3. Leading change towards higher performance: Stimulating and guiding deliberate progress towards a clear and engaging goal.
4. Thinking and Acting as One team: Identifying on the whole of the work task force, as much as one’s own area, thinking one team collaborates across boundaries and promoting cohesion with others.
5. Communicating with influence and impact: Influencing others thinking attitude and actions through convincing dialogue based on profound knowledge and credible reasoning. Telling a great story with conviction. Handling sensitive information and delicate situations with diplomacy .
6. Fostering excellence in learning and inquiry: Actively seeking emergent opinion and considering multiple view points. Promoting team and organisational learning by encouraging and guiding reflection on work practices to nourish the wisdom of experience and transform knowledge into know-how.
7. Exemplifying Personal Drive and Integrity: Embodying the work values, being a model of ethical conduct and guiding and supporting others to do the same. Persisting through barriers towards goal achieving.
