learning any server side language or framework is necessary even if you are a front end developer you should know the basics and it doesn't matter if it was php or node.js

basically no because it's not the only back end technology that can deal with the databse and server side you have many other languages such as python, .Net and the recent one node JS so it's not necessary

From my understanding and experience, I would safely say that there is no necessity to learn a specific programming language to become a web developer, the ultimate necessity to learn is algorithm and programming concepts and development patterns, then you can apply it with any language depending on your development needs and environment. That said I would recommend that you learn PHP for multiple reasons like easy environment, easy syntax, support communities, stability, at the end of the day it's one of the oldest and fast developed open source languages.

To be a web developer you need to learn any 1 language, that can be php, ruby, python etc. Php is one of them so you can ignore if you do not like php. There are many languages that can be used to develop websites. ... Others are hyped more, like Ruby (on Rails), Python or nodejs/ javascript.
