Surging occurs when there is more pressure in the condenser as compared to the pressure generated by the compressor. It may cause the backflow (reverse flow) of the refrigerant and may damage the compressor.

This phenomenon usually occurs due to a high temperature of the condenser that is why the chillers have hot gas bypass line to avoid causing this effect of surging.
