I do not understand the context of this question. I'll answer it by assuming by research you mean when someone is tasked to find every information they could about a particular topic, company, organization etc. There is no one set-in-stone methodology for research. Research in itself means gathering information from multiple legitimate sources of through different methods. Yes, currently Google and other search engines are where you start your research on the internet. There are online forums and communities based on different kind of practices, sharing of skill and resources etc.
Students need to understand that in this day and age, you can't say you don't know anything. Just Google it. And they should make use of Google to understand everything there is to understand about their particular avenue of interest or passion in which they are hopeful to develop a career. Because every field of study or interest keeps growing every day. There are new books, new movies, new scientific research papers, new algorithms to increase AI efficiency; it is endless.
Presenting a course on research methodology is a great way to improve students' research skills and introduce them to new methods and techniques. This is especially useful at a final-year or postgraduate level.
In terms of the best methodology for research: there is no one way that can be deemed as "the best". Each research project has its own areas of focus and constraints. It is therefore necessary to have knowledge of various methodologies and their pros and cons.
