Project success criteria, Project success factors, Project failure factors
There can be many factors in managing complex projects but from my expereince 3 factors play a major role in success or failure of the complex projects
1. Project Ownerhip from the Project Sponsors team
2. Right Mix of Stakeholder Engagement
3. Clear and timely communication
To lead people, the first thing is to understand the diversity of the people. I think ideally, when a new project starts, project manager shall first understand the vision and mission of the given project, then define the tasks and needed competences, then recruit right people with right competence, personalities. But in reality, project managers seldom have opportunity to recruit team members as such. Rather project resources are often allocated according to organizational practice and resource availability.
First, carefully select a capable team.
Second, spend a good amount of time in planning rather than executing
Third, promote the teamwork spirit within the team
Forth, carefully monitor the project progress
Fifth, adhere to deadlines
study the route cause for dealys and over come with solutions in day day to basis with advanced planing
For leading a complex project, determining KPI for cost, time and performance during iniciating life cyle of project and updating these KPI's during planning and execution is most important. Comunicating and management of stakeholder expectation ( especially expectation of top mangement and client ) , controlling the progress of project according to project baseline by using methods like EVM (Earn Value Manangement) and promoting team coorporation Can lead the project to sucsess. Project objective shall be determined and project manager shall prmote these objectives to project team.
Project faliur factor include delay in schedule, failing to cost management, lack of coorporation between project team and scope creap, and finally failing to reach customer requirements.
First you need to know that you are a leader, not a boss. Second, you need to unerstand your team needs and interests.
By creating master schedule with proper resource planning, all and accurate interrelated dependencies, critical items with lead time, hitorical lesson learned in similar projects, cash flow management, by setting clear roles and responsiblities to all team memebersand robust control processes.
We should examines the common reasons for poor performance of projects and must understand, by following few steps as below mention we can optimize criticity of projects,
1. Optimise the organisation
2. Establish effective governance
3. Know what you’re getting into
4. Get the right resources
5. Listen to your experts
6. Manage integration effectively
Simplified the work activities based on the Planning schedules / gantt-chart and do the implementation of work well and finish the project with a quality and good profit.
Please identify different segments of your project. Try to define each segments role and usefulness. Allocate your time to seat with each of the segments separately. Prioritize the segments as per gantt. chart of implementation. Keep your eyes open on each of the segments and finally finish your tasks on time.
1) Be a good communicator
2) Follow PMP principles in planning
3) Ensure to have all data required regarding my stakeholders
4) Always apply monitor, contol and assessment after each task to get the lessons learned and apply CR if required
5) Have a clear visibility over my base lines
