Leaders can no longer lead solely based on positional power. It is important for a leader to strike a chord with his or her team.
I didn't know about leaders used to be bosses. I see that effective leaders must be accepted by their people as leaders. They must understand thier people needs and wants and sell them the leader's vision as a winning proposition.
i might have to dissagree with the term leaders were bosses??
if we look at leaders who had followers i do think that qualities of leader has remained unchanged but have been extended to new categories and sub categories.they are softer, gentler and more attentive to team member needs.
social life and society structure was different.your grand father was acting much different than you act with your family today.they cared about their family the same way you do but with a different approach which was socially acceptable then.
leadership and leadership qualities have developed in the implementation side, but true qualities remained the same.
Leadership refers to power attained through personal attributes wheras bosses attain their authority through their position. A boss could be a leader but a leader is the one who is being adored & followed by others. People follow leaders becasue they want to whereas employees have to follow their bosses because they are BOSS. Its not a choice decision.
Mr. Umar, you probably sharing this quote from80s or early90s organizations where leader was boss and they used to dominates but the contemporary fast pace organizations have a bit change strategy. Their leaders are most of the time young or not too old and they work in collaboration with heads and employees and this gave birth of new style of leadership. Now the business leaders are partnering with division heads and get much closer and interacting them on regular basis to have update and monitor the progress which I think is good for both the parties.
Very true. My example; In my high school days when playing football I used to be a defender. What we used to do was just defend, and when the ball is on the other half we used even to sit down, waiting to defend. nowadays things have changed the defenders also go and help the strikers, and vice versa, strikers also help in defending. So its true there has been a change.
That leadership concept is expired. It is one of the reasons why most leadership in the not so distant past failed.
Today's version of leadership include servanthood as well.
in reality , the leader should have a balance between partnership and using Authority
The stated concept is no more practiced / valued in any organization presently. The idea / theme of 'Master and Salves' are already outdated. For the success of any organization, the business leaders must consider their people as partner and all business related issues should be shared with them. However, the employees of the organization play a vital role in the growth of business.
Hello Umar,
NO, I do not agree, I have faced this in a company where the previous manager did exactly what you described in the question, and needless to say the company productivity went down and that is why they brought me to replace the old manager.
The employees became lazy, spoiled and lacked of work ethics, that is why I would say that the best way is to lead by example, in the old days everyone wanted to be the boss because bosses did nothing and just gave orders, they come late to the office and leave early and get all the credit.
In todays market a successful leader is the leader that can motivate employees by his or her actions and to install good work ethics in the workplace.
