Pay is one important factor that individuals consider, but it is not the most important factor

i belive ‘job enjoyment’  is the highest motivator, in addition to other important factors like  exceptional leadership, ‘better treatment from their employer’, ‘more praise’ and ‘a greater sense of being valued’

Motivation depends of one's personal goals, needs & desires in life, as one works only if it is actually needed to achieve one's personal objectives and not because one wants to.

If all the objectives of a person's life is met, then you will not find him working and he looks for others ways to understand the purpose of his life.  In other words, it depends on the individual's situation in life.

For eg :-

If a person is a social worker, then his/her personal goal would be to serve others which in turn gives him / her the mental satisfaction and happiness.

If a person is poor, his motivation would be to get money (either through the right way or the wrong way - depending on his circumstance and upbringing in life).

If a person is intelligent or a genius, then, he / she may want to share his thoughts to others, for the sake of enlightening the world around him, as this is the way he finds to keep himself busy.  There is no point in keeping knowledge to oneself.  If you don't share it, it will rot at a later stage, since it will be forgotten.  By sharing knowledge, you gain a deeper understanding on the subject, as questions will arise if many people are involved who thinks from different angles.

If a person is looking for fame, then the motivation will be on that level.

If a person is employed, it could be job satisfaction, pleasant working environment, the opportunity to meet new people outside your personal life etc.....

These are few examples to understand motivation.

So you really cannot pinpoint what is the most important factor of motivation, since people keep changing with time which has a direct effect on one's personal goals and emotions.

In the olden times, it was to overcome poverty, but in today's world, people's thoughts and values have overpowered the true essence of this word.
