Active listening is of one of the main things required, if you want to become a top communicator. And its not about nodding your head in agreement. 
The listener needs to understand what the other person is communicating (both the overt meaning and the emotion behind it) and be able to convey interest, engagement, and caring to the other person. Below is a great piece from HBR on this.
