It's a pity today that many government around the world tend to think that they are not accountable to those who send them where they are. Many of those government do everything they can to stop us journalists from writing. Here in Mauritius, we have elections every five years, but nothing goes public as far as the financing of the elections are concerned. Declaration of assets by members of the parlaiment is just a myth. In Mauritius, for example, those people declare their assets to the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC). Those so called 'confidential' documents are then safely kept in drawers away from public scrutiny.
