Basic work for the system administrator is to maintain and manage the user accounts in an organization. Also responsible to manage different  servers in the organization, especially software side.

Basic work should be for a System Engineer:

Sytem Engineer basic works are

1) Design and Deploy Server environment

2) Monitor and Maintain Servers Hardware and Software (Windows, Linux, Unix, Solaris...)

3) Manage applications backup, disaster recovery.

4) Manage Security by WSUS, Antivirus, Firewalls etc.

5) Manage and Maintain Mail Exchange servers (Windows, Linux....)

 

This are the basic roles as per the question.

 

But it varies depends the company,  there is so many additional work which includes in System engineer jobs,

some advanced roles : Virtualization, clustering and lot.

some company include network engineer jobs too in System engineer role.

Basically, Systems Engineers responsibility is Server,Operating System related.At first we need to understand about area:

 

Network Engineer/Administrator: Network related (Switch,Router,Network Firewall,Network Protocol,Network,Design etc)

System Engineer/Administrator: Server and Operating System,

 

However, for a System Engineer responsibilities may vary based on company structure.Some companies are based on Windows and some are Linux/Unix.So,required qualification also varies.

But most common responsibilities are:

 

->Monitor and administer servers(Mail,DNS,FTP etc)

-> Generate report in a timely manner

->Troubleshoot 

-> Check log regular basis

-> Monitor servers and other components through monitoring tools (MRTG,Web Grapher,Cacti,Nagios,PRTG,Ichinga etc)

->Should have sound knowlledge about SSH,Telnet,POP,IMAP,SMTP,HTTP,HTTPS etc

->Concepts of LAN/MAN/WAN

-> Ability to draw and design using Visio

-> Documentation

 

 

Additional responsibilities can be added based on the company's technical scenario like as:

 

Knowledge on Active Directory,

Sound knowledge on Linux

Virtualization

Microsoft Exchange Server

SCCM

 

Some companies may add extra responsibilities like as:

Oracle or SQL (though database is a different area) if they have small database.
