You can't really say it's better, each has their own uses, upsides and downsides.
Blog sites spare you the coding part or going to a web designer, plus the hosting costs ( in most cases ). Building your own website is mostly for corporates and businesses, blogs are mostly for personal uses.

blog have more interaction with visitors , since there is a comments system ,ranking system , chatting and other tools and its very helpuful for persons.
website is more business and i will deliver an idea and a vision about the company and the type of the work.
but im sure that building your own website is the best, since own website can have a blog but blog cannot have website

A blog can easily be used by a non-technical person and the writer can focus on creating content for the consumer. If you want to persuade, influence or build and image of an expert in a field, blogs can be highly useful and cost less in maintain.
Although, limited in functionality, blogs can be used to write, post videos and images. I am not sure if payment systems can be connected with blogs. There might be many limitations since the functionality provided by the blogging platform may be limited but userfriendly. ( I am eager to know the limitations in blogs from those who have used it)
If you need more functionality and flexibility and have more resources, you may want to create a separate website.
