Khalid this is very important question I believe you have asked, what I have observed that to success in this profession, one must work on few areas;

1: Knowledge of HR itself: being student of HR one must remain update with latest trends and practices prevail in locally and globally so that customization could be done.

2: Knowledge of Business: to sell your HR and idea to business owner, learn the technical side of the business and sell your proposal to them. Without doing so, one could not prove himself.

3: Development of Soft side: You could not do the job professionally without having sound communication skills, positive attitude and consistency we will not bring business leaders on same page.

That is my experience and key focus; I believe other HR fraternity will input their suggestions too.

He needs to be a professional in the HR career, also becoming a  PHR or SPHR will be a big plus.
