It is subject to person's mind set. Some employees are career oriented and they are motiviated by career growth. Career growth is their motivating force to work hard. Some employees work hard for money only.

I see that what motivates an employee depends on his location regarding the fierarchy of needs. Money will motivate peopel at the base of the pyramid, while people at the top of the pyramid will be looking more for self assurance criteria.
