I agree if a research is to be carried out it should add value to something otherwise its a wasted time and resources, why waste resources and time when we can benefit humanity.
I think research has two different facets -
Scientific research which is the basis for today's modern world. Developments in pure science always lead to mutliple business areas later. Not all the research may turn in to business.
Industrial research is always focused on enhancing business opportunities. Today R&D centers being setup by industrial houses are purely application oriented and support the business.
As per me, we must have both type of researches to explore this nature better and make this world better for next generations.
I don't agree. Application-oriented research is based on a lot of other reserach which was not diectly applicable.
I agreed , that should be application and scientific oriented.
if you look at the education system, maths, science and engineering are at the top. humanities and social science comes then and finaly music. maths is taught everyday but not music. so the hierarchial system is based on the need of the industry. no wonder if somebody tells that research should be applied or industry oriented. the industr controls the research. few people would be interested in research programs without immediate benefits. such research will be considered as hobby just like music.
I accept you that the desire of the researcher or universities is not enough to have for a good research. Impact (applications) on society or knowledge contribution or advancement of technology should be the measure.
