Current measuring instruments always consist of a (CT) current transformer coil as secondary that has a specific ratio rating with a primary current which is the current of your conductor. This secondary current from your CT coil is designed to match with the resistance of your meter coil resistance that is why meter coil has an ampere rating corresponding to the range given at your meter scale.
Now if you use 8amp meter scale coil for 12amp you will have problem with your CT coil what to use that will compensate with the meter coil resistance, have you considered that?
It shall cause some complications in the ratings and ratio computations with the currents of the CT coil and Meter coil.
maybe you want to say that you have air conditioning and it needs to12 amper,and you want measure this currentbut you have ammeter which can measure only8 amper as max. currentmy answer isi believe that by connecting two ammeter as series and then you can put it in the power circut to measure the currentthe new ammeter will give you high range reach to16 amperand there are another devices that is used to measure this current
