Is Group ism and nepotism very prominent in GCC comoanies?
Office politics in normal in any organization. The best way to avoid is by keeping yourself neutral and friendly.
Effective management is accountable to prevent such issues and eliminate them if they existed therfore, I wouldn't say that they are normal.
On the other hand, I worked in the GCC and other regions and I see that there is no business issues specific about any region, only different cultures but business is business every where.
I suggest the following for a better business culture:
- Ensure staff satisfaction
- Keep adequate workload for all staff to prevent free time which is usually utilized for such discussions
- Get HR to train the staff staff using the7 habits of the highly effective people by the late Steven covey. The related concept here are the circles of influence and the circles of concern.
- Incorporate "supporting management decisions" as a performance measure
Finally, and based on my experience, decisions are made based on information. Usually I don't have all the information used for the decision and accordingly I may try to understand it but I won't fight it.
Yes, it is quite normal. The following may be kept in mind to keep ourselves from office politics:
1. Discourage any kind of discussion on politics.
2. Engage the employees more on official works.
3. Supervisors need to be more proactive and monitor employees of similar habit/nature.
4. Motivate the employees.
5. Role play as neutral.
