Do you think ISO 14001 (Environmental Mangement system) and OHSAS 18001 (Standard for Occupational hazards) made difference in our living world?

ISO14001 - Environmental management system which focuses on assessing the environmental impact an organization makes in terms of pollution/safety and encourages organizations to identify projects to reduce the impacts. OHSAS18001 - Standard for Occupational hazards focuses on assessing the health hazards of organizations activities on employees and encourages organizations to identify projects eliminate or minimize these hazards.

Hello Friends,

Thank you very much for your good response to the question.

If I summarize, Majority of us feel, both these standards really made impact in the world we are living in.

There are certain concerns like, these are not regional specific and finding an expert is a costly affair. This is really a point to debate - how we can make them regional so that we can have more experts in our own regions.

Otherwise many of us feel, this is an need in today's world!

ISO14001 makes its impact to bring down pollution levels in our environment and can make our earth liveable. Today we are living in a fear of worser future days due to Green house effect, Global warming, Soil erosion, Soil pollution, Ground water contamination, Acid rains, Ozone depletion, Verity of deseases, etc. I think, more and more adoption of this standard will definitely make our planet liveable for our kids in the future....

OHSAS18001 makes its impact by ensuring businesses never exploit people by using them in unhealthy work environments! It is very much for every body in the organization starting from Management to the shop floor worker. We all face several injuries and health hazards, which may not be noticeable immediately. But definitely it will have its effect on the people in long terms making our world unhealthy. OHSAS has its place in today's businesses.

These standards should not be looked in terms of ROI, as there is no value you can define for what you give back to this earth and the future generation!! Every small contribution can change the way we live...

Yes, yes & yes. Without ISO14001 pollution levels would have been so high that it would be difficult to live nearby a wide perimeter around chemical industries. The sulfur treatment unit was included in the chemical industries for the same basic reason, to reduce pollutant emission. The emission standards are being maintained only since ISO14001 was accepted as a standard. OHSAS18001 assigns the responibility of risks or hazards to management also. Not only the worker, but each person at the top management, views hazard management as their priority because of OHSAS standard. Both these standards have played a great role in our lives.

I didn't have a chance to work with these standards. Conceptually, unless implementing these standards have a positive ROI, I will not recommend them. I think they will become useful when all our processes are perfected to our benefits and these standards are the only missing parts.
