Depending on the industry you are working in, there are several different software programs that can help.
In Civils, there is BIM, which is a 'building information modelling'. This is essentially an intelligent 3D model, which can provide MTOs based on what has been modelled.
In Oil and Gas, a common tool, which can be utilised by the QS, is PDMS. This is a piping design software, which is used to create the piping system on a module or plant. The benefit of this to the QS is that it can run off an MTO for you to transfer into you BOQ>
For structural steel works, there is a program called Staad modelling, which structural engineers will use to create the steel frame. again this produces an MTO.
Final, and most vital piece of software to remember is... EXCEL!
